What Does “Creating Dharma Connections” Mean?
“Creating Dharma connections” is a Buddhist expression for establishing positive connections with the teachings or others. Giving scriptures or Buddhist reading material free of charge to interested readers is a common way of doing this in Buddhist communities.
Sutra of the Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva
The Sutra of the Past Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is traditionally attributed to the Tang-dynasty translator Siksananda, although scholars hold differing views about its origins. It describes Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's great vows in previous lives, including two well-known stories:
- Brahmin Girl: To find out her mother's whereabouts, she devoted herself to prayer, and later vowed to save all beings. The text says, 'Brahmin Girl is the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.'
- Bright Eyes: She made offerings and vows to save her deceased mother. The sutra says, “The girl Bright Eyes is Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.”
Both stories begin with care for parents, and the sutra also discusses karmic cause and effect. This echoes the reminder in students' accounts to “respect and look after your parents, bring them happiness and avoid causing them worry”. For details, see Student Testimonials 。
The Contemplation Sutra
The single-volume Amitayurdhyana Sutra was translated in Jiankang during the Yuanjia era of the Liu Song dynasty by Kalayasas, a translator from the Western Regions. Also known as the Contemplation Sutra or the Sutra of Sixteen Contemplations, it forms the Three Pure Land Sutras together with the Infinite Life Sutra and the Amitabha Sutra.
The sutra opens with a story set in Rajagriha: Prince Ajatashatru imprisons his father, King Bimbisara, and his mother, Queen Vaidehi, is also confined. Vaidehi bows towards Vulture Peak from afar and appeals to the Buddha for help. He teaches her the Three Blessings of pure conduct and the Sixteen Contemplations of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
| Content | Focus |
|---|---|
| Worldly virtue | To be kind to parents, to respect teachers, to show compassion and not to kill, and to practice the ten good deeds |
| Virtue of precepts | Taking the Three Refuges, observing the precepts and maintaining proper conduct |
| Virtue of practice | To develop the mind of enlightenment, to deeply believe in the law of cause and effect, to read and recite the Mahayana scriptures, and to encourage the practitioners |
| The Sixteen Contemplations (First Three) | Contemplation of the sun, water and the ground… |
| Ninth contemplation | Contemplation of the true body of Amitayus Buddha, regarded as the most important of the sixteen contemplations |
“Contemplation” in the sutra refers to focused visualisation practice. For example, the first, contemplation of the sun, asks practitioners to “concentrate the mind on one place, imagining the west” and visualise the setting sun. Like meditative concentration and insight practice, it values attention and awareness, although they belong to different practice traditions. To learn about meditation and insight, see The Beginner Meditation and Insight Workshop 。

Teacher's Path
III. Buddhism, I Ching and Reiki: The Teacher's Spiritual Background
Cathy Wong shares that, after a difficult period in her life, she was grateful to encounter the wisdom of Reiki, the I Ching and Buddhism, and began applying Buddhist wisdom in daily life. She believes that beyond cultivating human and heavenly blessings, Buddhism offers spiritual growth and the opening of wisdom. This also motivates Soul Love Center's free distribution of Buddhist scriptures.
Do I Need to Be Buddhist to Learn Reiki?
No. Reiki does not belong to any religion, and learning Usui Reiki requires no religious belief. Scripture distribution is a sharing of the teacher's personal practice and is unrelated to course enrolment.
The Difference Between the Five Reiki Principles and the Five Buddhist Precepts
The Five Usui Reiki Principles and the Five Buddhist Precepts share the same Chinese name, but differ in content:
| Five Usui Reiki Principles | Five Buddhist Precepts |
|---|---|
| Just for today, do not be angry | Do not kill |
| Just for today, do not worry | Do not steal |
| Be grateful | Do not engage in sexual misconduct |
| Work diligently | Do not speak falsely |
| Be kind to others | Do not consume alcohol |
The Five Reiki Principles offer positive guidance for daily cultivation of the mind, while Buddhism's Five Precepts are ethical commitments. The two should not be confused. A Complete Introduction to Mikao Usui and Reiki and Mikao Usui ; for the teacher's full story, see Cathy Wong: The Healing Journey of an IARP-Registered Reiki Master Teacher 。
“Karma” and “Merit” in the Courses
The Intermediate Level course of Usui Reiki includes 'Understanding how the Law of Karma operates' and 'How to plant the seeds of good fortune (the Law of the Universe)', reflecting the teacher's integration of Buddhist wisdom in the teaching style.
