Three Layers of Body, Mind, and Spirit · Hong Kong Data · Reiki, Mindfulness, and I Ching · 7-Day Introduction Plan

With a fast-paced Hong Kong lifestyle, many people are busy taking care of work and family, but rarely taking time to care for themselves. 'Integration of Body, Mind and Spirit' reminds us: Health is not just the absence of disease, but also the stability of emotions and the meaning of life.

This article will start from the World Health Organization's definition of health, explain the three layers of body, mind, and spirit; reference the latest Hong Kong mental health data; compare the purposes and evidence of Reiki (Usui Reiki), Mindfulness, and I Ching Yin Yang Awareness; and finally provide a 7-Day Introduction Plan.

⚠️ Important Statement: Integration of Body, Mind and Spirit and Energy Self-Healing Methods are auxiliary relaxation and self-care ways, and cannot replace medical or psychological treatment. If you have ongoing emotional distress or physical discomfort, please consult a registered doctor or clinical psychologist.

In One Sentence: What Is Integration of Body, Mind and Spirit?

Integration of body, mind and spirit, is to care for the body, mind and spirit as an interconnected whole: care for the body's rest and relaxation, care for the mind's emotions and thoughts, and care for the spiritual aspect of meaning and connection. It is a daily self-care approach, rather than medical.

Definition

1. What Is Integration of Body, Mind and Spirit?

Starting with the WHO Definition of Health

In its 1948 Constitution, the World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Health has always involved more than the body alone.

The Biopsychosocial Model

In 1977, American psychiatrist George Engel proposed the 'Biopsychosocial Model' in the journal Science, advocating that understanding health and disease should consider physiological, psychological and social factors. This is an important foundation of the 'holistic' concept in modern medicine.

Body, Mind and Spirit Adds the Spiritual Dimension

Integration of body, mind and spirit extends beyond the physical and mental aspects, including the 'spirit' dimension: meaning, values, and connections with oneself, others, and larger wholes. This 'spirit' does not necessarily refer to religion, but rather concerns 'why I live,' 'my relationship with the world,' and similar issues.

The Three Influence One Another

Fatigue in the body can lead to low mood, long-term stress can cause poor sleep, and a loss of direction can leave one lacking energy. The focus of integration of body, mind and spirit is to care for all three aspects simultaneously, allowing them to support each other.

Hong Kong Data

II. The Mental and Physical Condition of Hong Kong Urban Residents: 2025 Data

In 2025, the Department of Social Work at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong conducted the seventh Hong Kong Depression Index Survey, collecting 2,695 valid questionnaires. Key findings included:

Indicator Result
Overall average depression score 7.27 points, the highest across the surveys
Moderately severe depression or above From 11.1% in 2023 to 13.1%; from 8.4% in 2020
Overall average anxiety score 5.90 points, the highest across the surveys
Moderate to severe anxiety From 18.5% in 2023 to 22.6%
Severe anxiety Rose from 6.4% to 9%
Moderate to severe depression among those aged 18–24 (Generation Z) 43.5%
Would not, or were unsure whether they would, seek professional help 55%, mainly because they were “busy with life” or “believed they could cope on their own”

The survey also found a significant positive correlation between screen time and depression and anxiety scores among Generation Z. Those who chose not to address stress had markedly higher combined depression and anxiety scores.

These data remind us: emotional care should not wait until 'things go wrong' to begin. Daily self-care can be the first step; however, if the situation continues or becomes severe, professional assistance should be sought.

Three Levels

3. The Three Aspects: Body, Mind and Spirit

Aspect includes Common signs of imbalance Daily care approaches
Body Sleep, physical energy, muscle tension and breathing Fatigue, tense shoulders and neck, poor sleep Regular routines, exercise and relaxation practices
Mind Emotions, thoughts and stress Anxiety, irritability and racing thoughts Mindfulness, emotional journalling and talking with others
Spirit Meaning, values and connection Confusion, emptiness and loss of direction Reflection, gratitude, connection with others and philosophies of personal cultivation

Signs of imbalance are references for self-awareness, not diagnosis. Seek medical advice for persistent physical symptoms.

How do the courses of Soul Love Center correspond to the three levels?

The Usui Reiki course at Soul Love Center is designed according to the three levels: Level 1 focuses on the body, Level 2 focuses on the mind, Advanced Level focuses on spirituality.

Self-Check

4. A Body, Mind and Spirit Self-Reflection Checklist

Take 5 minutes to rate each of the following items on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best):

Aspect Question Score
Body Have I slept well over the past week? __ / 10
Body Does my body feel relaxed? __ / 10
Mind Have my emotions been generally steady? __ / 10
Mind Can I quieten my thoughts? __ / 10
Spirit Does my life feel meaningful? __ / 10
Spirit Do I feel connected to the people around me? __ / 10

The lowest score item, which can be used as a starting point for care. This table is only for self-awareness and is not a clinical assessment tool.

Methods

5. Common Self-Care Approaches for Body, Mind and Spirit

Usui Reiki

An energy practice taught by Mikao Usui through the association he established in Tokyo in 1922. After attunement, students use their hands to work with themselves or others, guided by the Five Reiki Principles in daily self-cultivation. For an introduction, see What is Usui Reiki? A complete introduction 。

Stillness and Mindfulness

Train attention and awareness by focusing on breathing, bodily sensations or present-moment experience. Soul Love Center's The Beginner Meditation and Insight Workshop Includes basic meditation, breathing, and awareness. For comparison, see Comparison of Meditation, Seated Meditation, and Reiki 。

Chakra Awareness

The seven chakras provide a reference framework for awareness of different aspects of body and mind, often combined with Reiki hand positions. For a comparison with the Five Elements, see The Five Elements and Seven Chakras: An I Ching Perspective 。

Yin-Yang Awareness Through the I Ching

Understanding one's state from the perspectives of yin and yang, and the movement and stillness, is a philosophical and self-awareness framework, as discussed in Section 8.

Gratitude and Personal Cultivation

“Be grateful”, one of the Five Reiki Principles, and keeping a daily gratitude record are simple ways to care for the spiritual dimension.

Awareness of Family Relationships

Families often influence all three levels of the body, mind, and spirit. Family constellations and the wisdom of the I Ching are discussed in the following section. I Ching, Family Constellations and Reiki: Three Approaches to Deeper Healing 。

Evidence

6. Research Evidence for Different Approaches

Rational selection methods require understanding the current research status of each individual:

Approach Research current situation Main aspect supported
Mindfulness meditation A 2014 review in JAMA Internal Medicine covering 47 trials and 3,515 participants found moderate evidence of improvements in anxiety, depression and pain, although the effects were small. Mind
Gratitude practice Emmons and McCullough (2003): The grateful group showed improvement in multiple indicators of positive emotions. Mind and spirit
Usui Reiki NCCIH: Not clearly proven effective for any health purpose, and no harmful effects found Body, mind and spirit (traditional uses)
Yin-Yang Awareness Through the I Ching A philosophical framework, not a therapy Spirit

Conclusion: Different methods have their own purposes; mindfulness has more research support, Reiki is suitable as an auxiliary for relaxation, ceremony, and self-cultivation. Scientific discussion of Reiki is available. Is Reiki Healing Effective? Scientific Perspective on Energy Healing 。

Reiki

7. Reiki's Role in Integrating Body, Mind and Spirit

Body: A Daily Period of Relaxation

Self-Reiki hand positions provide 10 to 20 minutes of quiet, relaxing time each day. Hand positions are seen in 12 Reiki Hand Positions for Self-Healing 。

Mind: Caring for Emotions

The Student in Student Testimonials describes it as follows: “Reiki is like an emotional stabiliser that can ease negative emotions within a short time (5–10 minutes).” This is a personal experience; results vary.

Spirit: Personal Cultivation Through the Five Principles

Usui taught students to recite the Five Reiki Principles morning and evening: just for today, do not be angry, do not worry, be grateful, work diligently and be kind to others. His memorial calls them “a great teaching for self-cultivation”. For the inscription, see Mikao Usui 。

You Can Experience Reiki Without Learning It

If you don't want to learn, you can book a Reiki treatment, and the process is seen in Reiki Session Fees and What Happens During a Session ; for common applications, see Can Reiki help with insomnia, anxiety, and emotions? 。

I Ching

8. The I Ching: Understanding Balance Through Yin and Yang

The I Ching says, 'One yin and one yang is called the Dao.' Viewing the body and mind through yin and yang, it can be simply divided into 'movement' and 'stillness:'

State Common manifestations Direction towards balance
Leaning towards movement (yang) Busyness, impatience and racing thoughts Schedule the 'Still' time: Mindfulness, Self Reiki, and early bedtime
Leaning towards stillness (yin) Fatigue, lack of motivation and withdrawal Schedule the 'Move' time: Walk, Invite friends, or do a small thing

The Judgement commentary on Gen says, “Stop when it is time to stop; move when it is time to move. When movement and stillness each accord with their time, the way is bright.” Balance is not permanent stillness but appropriate movement and rest. This is a philosophical framework for awareness, not a medical method. Further reading: The connection between I Ching Philosophy and Reiki Healing 。

FAQ

Integrating Body, Mind and Spirit: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the integration of body, mind, and spirit?

Holistic wellbeing is the concept of caring for the body, mind (emotions and thoughts), and spirit (sense of meaning and connection) as an interconnected whole. It aligns with the World Health Organization's definition of health as 'a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.'

Does “Spirit” Mean Religion?

Not necessarily. In holistic wellbeing, 'spirit' generally refers to a sense of meaning, values, and connection with oneself, others, and the larger whole, and is not limited to any particular religion.

What Is the Mental Health Situation in Hong Kong?

The seventh Hong Kong Depression Index Survey, conducted in 2025 by CUHK's Department of Social Work and The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong, recorded the highest depression and anxiety indices in the survey's history. Moderately severe or worse depression rose from 11.1% in 2023 to 13.1%, while moderate to severe anxiety rose from 18.5% to 22.6%. Of respondents, 55% said they would not seek professional help or were unsure whether they would.

Is There Research Supporting Mindfulness?

Yes. A comprehensive analysis published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2014 (47 trials, 3,515 participants) found that mindfulness meditation courses have moderate evidence of effectiveness in improving anxiety, depression, and pain, but the effects are not substantial.

Is There Research Supporting Reiki?

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) states that Reiki has not been clearly shown effective for any health purpose and that no scientific evidence supports the existence of its proposed energy field. Research has not found harmful effects. Reiki can complement relaxation and self-care.

Can the integration of body, mind, and spirit replace seeing a doctor or undergoing psychological therapy?

No. If there is persistent emotional distress or physical discomfort, please consult a registered doctor, a clinical psychologist, or another qualified professional. The mind-body integration methods are suitable only as an auxiliary method.
