About the Sutra
1. What Is the Contemplation Sutra?
Title and Attribution
The announcement on this page retains its original Chinese title, commonly rendered as the Sutra on the Contemplation of Immeasurable Life. The standard title includes “Buddha” and is often shortened to the Contemplation Sutra. The CBETA edition attributes the translation to Kalayashas during the Liu Song dynasty. It has one fascicle and the canonical reference T0365.
This page uses the attribution and content of the commonly used Chinese translation as a reading guide. It does not settle scholarly questions about the sutra's composition or translation history. For further background, consult Buddhist dictionaries, introductions to the sutra and academic research.
“Contemplation” in the Title
“Contemplation” here is not arbitrary imagination, simply looking at pictures or resting with closed eyes. It is the contemplation taught in the sutra, with Buddhist beliefs and practice goals. Its objects include scenes of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, Amitayus Buddha, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva.
Amitayus and Amitabha
Within Chinese Pure Land Buddhism, the Amitayus Buddha described in this sutra is Amitabha Buddha. The scripture concerns the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, contemplation of the Buddha and rebirth there. These are Buddhist teachings to be understood in their religious context, not rewritten as medical effects or guarantees of worldly wealth.
Three Pure Land Sutras
2. The Contemplation Sutra and the Three Pure Land Sutras
Chinese Buddhism commonly groups the Sutra of Immeasurable Life, the Sutra on the Contemplation of Amitayus Buddha and the Amitabha Sutra as the Three Pure Land Sutras. All concern Amitabha and the Land of Ultimate Bliss, but they are distinct scriptures with different emphases.
| Sutra | Common abbreviated titles | Main focus for readers |
|---|---|---|
| The Sutra of Immeasurable Life | Immeasurable Life Sutra | The original vows of the monk Dharmakara, Amitabha Buddha and the Land of Ultimate Bliss |
| The Sutra on the Contemplation of Amitayus Buddha | Contemplation Sutra; Sutra of the Sixteen Contemplations | Queen Vaidehi's request for teaching, the Three Blessings of Pure Karma, the Sixteen Contemplations and the Nine Grades of Rebirth |
| The Amitabha Sutra Spoken by the Buddha | Amitabha Sutra | The Land of Ultimate Bliss, recitation of the Buddha's name and the Buddhas' encouragement of faith |
Before reading a comic edition, identify the sutra's title to avoid confusing the Contemplation Sutra, the Immeasurable Life Sutra and adaptations from different publishers.
Narrative Background
3. Queen Vaidehi's Story: The Narrative Background
Beginning with a Family Crisis in Rajagriha
The sutra begins with Prince Ajatashatru of Rajagriha, influenced by Devadatta, imprisoning his father, King Bimbisara. Queen Vaidehi finds ways to bring food to her husband and is subsequently confined herself. This court and family crisis provides the narrative background for the Contemplation Sutra's teaching.
From Suffering to Requesting the Teaching
Queen Vaidehi asks the Buddha to reveal a pure place free from sorrow and to teach her how to contemplate and practise. Her suffering and request lead into the Buddha's teachings on the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, the Three Blessings and the Sixteen Contemplations.
Distinctions to Keep in Mind While Reading
This is a Buddhist scriptural narrative, not a psychological diagnosis or family therapy case. Readers may reflect on suffering, aspiration, compassion and practice, but should not infer that those harmed must endure violence, be forced to forgive or give up practical safety and professional support.
Three Blessings
4. The Three Blessings of Pure Karma: A Foundation for Contemplation
Before the Sixteen Contemplations, the sutra presents the Three Blessings. These show that its focus extends beyond visualising scenes to everyday conduct, precepts and aspiration.
First, care for and support your parents, serve and respect teachers and elders, refrain from killing with a compassionate heart, and practise the ten wholesome deeds. Second, take and uphold the Three Refuges, observe the precepts fully and maintain proper conduct. Third, awaken the aspiration for enlightenment, deeply trust cause and effect, read and recite Mahayana teachings, and encourage other practitioners.
—The Sutra on the Contemplation of Amitayus Buddha
| Sequence | Sutra content | Reading focus |
|---|---|---|
| First blessing | To be kind to parents, to respect teachers, to show compassion and not to kill, and to practice the ten good deeds | Caring for parents, respecting teachers, compassion and good deeds |
| Second blessing | Taking the Three Refuges, observing the precepts and maintaining proper conduct | Buddhist refuge, precepts and standards of conduct |
| Third blessing | To develop the mind of enlightenment, to deeply believe in the law of cause and effect, to read and recite the Mahayana scriptures, and to encourage the practitioners | Aspiration, cause and effect, and study and practice in Mahayana Buddhism |
“Cultivating Merit” Is Not a Transaction That Guarantees a Particular Outcome
This page introduces the Three Blessings to explain the sutra's practice context. They should not be read as an exchange in which receiving a book or performing a ritual guarantees wealth, recovery or a particular result. The meaning of faith, study and practice cannot be reduced to guaranteed worldly outcomes.
Sixteen Contemplations
5. Overview of the Sixteen Contemplations
The Contemplation Sutra is also called the Sutra of the Sixteen Contemplations because it presents these contemplations in sequence. Abbreviated names differ slightly across commentaries. The table below uses common names with brief explanations based on the sutra. It is a reading index, not a set of instructions for practising independently.
| Sequence | Common name | Content summary |
|---|---|---|
| First contemplation | Contemplation of the setting sun | Directing the mind westwards, beginning with contemplation of the sunset |
| Second contemplation | Contemplation of water | Progressing through contemplations of clear water, ice and lapis lazuli |
| Third contemplation | Contemplation of the ground | Contemplating the precious lapis lazuli ground and adornments of the Pure Land |
| Fourth contemplation | Contemplation of trees | Contemplating the jewelled trees and magnificent scenery of the Land of Ultimate Bliss |
| Fifth contemplation | Contemplation of the water of eight excellent qualities, or the jewelled ponds | Contemplating the jewelled ponds and their water of eight excellent qualities |
| Sixth contemplation | General contemplation, or contemplation of the jewelled pavilions | An overall contemplation of Pure Land scenes, including jewelled trees, ground, ponds and pavilions |
| Seventh contemplation | Contemplation of the lotus throne | Contemplating the lotus throne made of seven treasures |
| Eighth contemplation | Contemplation of the images, or precious images | Contemplating images of the Buddha and bodhisattvas and their adornments |
| Ninth contemplation | Contemplation of the true body, or the Buddha's body | Contemplating the form and radiance of Amitayus Buddha |
| Tenth contemplation | Contemplation of Avalokiteshvara | Contemplating the bodily form of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva |
| Eleventh contemplation | Contemplation of Mahasthamaprapta | Contemplating the bodily form of Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva |
| Twelfth contemplation | Universal contemplation | Contemplating oneself born within a lotus in the Land of Ultimate Bliss |
| Thirteenth contemplation | Contemplation of varied forms | Contemplating the manifested forms of the Buddha and bodhisattvas |
| Fourteenth contemplation | Contemplation of rebirth in the upper category | Conditions for rebirth in the upper-upper, upper-middle and upper-lower grades |
| Fifteenth contemplation | Contemplation of rebirth in the middle category | Conditions for rebirth in the middle-upper, middle-middle and middle-lower grades |
| Sixteenth contemplation | Contemplation of rebirth in the lower category | Conditions for rebirth in the lower-upper, lower-middle and lower-lower grades |
Why Does the Sutra Progress from Scenery to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Rebirth?
The sequence begins with scenes such as the sun, water and ground, gradually turns to the Pure Land's splendour and the forms of Buddhas and bodhisattvas, and ends with the conditions for rebirth of beings in different grades. Understanding this sequence helps readers place the comic's scenes within the context of the whole sutra.
Do Not Turn Contemplation of the Setting Sun into a Sun-Gazing Exercise
This page is a reading guide to the scripture. It does not recommend literally gazing at the sun on your own, or adapt religious contemplation into a health treatment. To study and practise the Contemplation Sutra formally, seek guidance from a Buddhist teacher or centre with relevant scriptural expertise.
Nine Grades of Rebirth
6. What Are the Nine Grades of Rebirth?
The last three of the Sixteen Contemplations concern rebirth in the upper, middle and lower categories. Each category has upper, middle and lower grades, together forming the Nine Grades of Rebirth. These classify conditions for rebirth and religious practice in the sutra; they are not a scorecard for judging the character of modern readers.
| Corresponding contemplation | Three categories | Three grades within each category |
|---|---|---|
| Fourteenth contemplation | Upper category | Upper-upper, upper-middle and upper-lower grades of rebirth |
| Fifteenth contemplation | Middle category | Middle-upper, middle-middle and middle-lower grades of rebirth |
| Sixteenth contemplation | Lower category | Lower-upper, lower-middle and lower-lower grades of rebirth |
Different Buddhist schools and commentary traditions interpret this material in their own ways. This page explains only the structure of the sutra and does not replace a teacher's exposition or a school's instruction.
Reading the Comic Edition
7. How to Read the Comic Edition Alongside the Sutra
Step 1: Identify the Characters and Story
On a first reading, identify figures such as King Bimbisara, Ajatashatru, Queen Vaidehi and Shakyamuni Buddha. Understand why Vaidehi requests the teaching before reading about the Three Blessings and Sixteen Contemplations.
Step 2: Distinguish the Story, Teachings and Adaptation Notes
Dialogue, scene changes and narration in a comic may include adaptations by its writer or artist. Distinguish the original scripture, a plain-language rendering and the creator's additions. When questions arise, compare the CBETA text or a reliable Buddhist introduction.
Step 3: Understand the Whole Before Attempting the Practices Independently
A comic can introduce the story and encourage interest in reading. To explore contemplation methods, precepts or teachings on rebirth more deeply, seek relevant Buddhist instruction rather than draw conclusions solely from a comic or webpage.
Which Comic Edition Is Being Distributed?
The original announcement provides no author, publisher, edition, page count or cover details. This page therefore does not assume a particular publisher's or creator's edition, or claim that it covers the entire sutra, includes complete commentary or suits all ages. If you have specific needs, ask the centre for the cover and copyright-page details first.
Reading with Children
Parents can preview the edition and read with children according to their level of understanding. Material about imprisonment, suffering or death can be explained in an age-appropriate way. Fear or guilt should not be used to pressure children into accepting a belief.
Different Traditions
8. Distinguishing Buddhist Contemplation, Meditation, Reiki and the I Ching
The Soul Love Center website includes scripture distribution, Usui Reiki, Reiki sessions, the I Ching, and body, mind and spirit content. These may inspire one another in reading and personal reflection, but they are not the same lineage and cannot serve as historical proof or evidence of therapeutic effects for one another.
| Content | Main focus | Distinctions That Should Be Maintained |
|---|---|---|
| Contemplation in the Contemplation Sutra | Buddhist practice in the context of Amitabha, the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and rebirth | It is not equivalent to general relaxation imagery or a medical method |
| Modern meditation and mindfulness | Includes many religious and secular practices of attention and awareness | Not all forms of meditation are rooted in Pure Land belief |
| Usui Reiki | A lineage originating in Japan that includes attunement and hand-position practice | Reiki attunement is not Buddhist refuge or the Sixteen Contemplations of the Contemplation Sutra |
| Reiki healing | Generally refers to a Reiki healing or relaxation experience offered by a practitioner | It is not medical diagnosis or treatment of illness; scripture should not be used to guarantee therapeutic effects |
| I Ching | An ancient Chinese classic and its later philosophical, image-and-number and other interpretive traditions | It is neither the Pure Land teaching of the Contemplation Sutra nor a synonym for Reiki |
| holistic wellbeing | A broad term discussing physical, psychological and meaning-related aspects of life | The evidence and limitations of each method must be assessed separately |
Do I Need to Be Buddhist to Learn Reiki?
Readers new to this website may ask this after seeing the scripture distribution announcements. These announcements and Reiki courses are separate content. If you are concerned about religious recitation, rituals or belief requirements in a course, clarify them with the teacher before enrolling and choose according to your own beliefs and values.

Everyday Reflection
9. From Reading to Everyday Reflection
Even without undertaking religious practice, readers can turn what they read into everyday reflection. The following are general reading questions, not the Contemplation Sutra's practice sequence or a specific course procedure at the centre.
On Caring
The first of the Three Blessings mentions caring for parents and respecting teachers and elders. You might ask: within safe, reasonable boundaries, is there one small thing I can do today to care for family or thank a teacher?
On Compassion
When reading “refrain from killing with a compassionate heart”, notice your attitude towards other people and animals. Turning goodwill into concrete action matters more than using religious language to judge others.
On Focus and Learning
When reading the Sixteen Contemplations, first understand the overall structure. There is no need to push yourself in pursuit of special sensations. Write down a question and ask someone with relevant scriptural expertise.
On Caring for Body, Mind and Spirit
Religious reading can contribute to a personal sense of meaning, but cannot replace sleep, nutrition, exercise, social support or medical care. Seek help from a qualified professional for persistent emotional difficulties.

12. Frequently Asked Questions About the Comic and the Contemplation Sutra
Can I Still Obtain the Comic Edition of the Contemplation Sutra?
The original announcement was published on 7 September 2021. That old announcement alone cannot establish current availability. Please contact WhatsApp 9121 4927 or email Soullovecentre@hotmail.com first to confirm whether distribution continues.
Does Free Distribution Include Free Postage?
No. Free reading material and delivery charges are separate matters. Confirm whether postage is available, who pays for it and whether collection is possible when enquiring.
Are the Shorter and Fuller Titles of the Contemplation Sutra Referring to the Same Scripture?
Yes. “Contemplation of Immeasurable Life Sutra” is a common abbreviated title. The standard title is the Sutra on the Contemplation of Amitayus Buddha, also called the Contemplation Sutra or Sutra of the Sixteen Contemplations.
Who Translated the Contemplation Sutra, and How Many Fascicles Does It Have?
The commonly used Chinese translation has one fascicle. CBETA attributes it to Kalayashas during the Liu Song dynasty, with the Taisho Tripitaka reference T0365.
Which Are the Three Pure Land Sutras?
Usually, these are the Sutra of Immeasurable Life, the Sutra on the Contemplation of Amitayus Buddha and the Amitabha Sutra. All are important scriptures in Chinese Pure Land Buddhism, but their lengths and emphases differ.
What Are the Three Blessings of Pure Karma?
The sutra lists three groups of practices: care for parents, serve teachers and elders, refrain from killing with compassion and practise the ten wholesome deeds; take the Three Refuges, fully observe the precepts and maintain proper conduct; awaken the aspiration for enlightenment, deeply trust cause and effect, read and recite Mahayana teachings, and encourage practitioners.
How Do the Sixteen Contemplations Relate to the Nine Grades of Rebirth?
The final three of the Sixteen Contemplations concern rebirth in the upper, middle and lower categories. Each category is divided into upper, middle and lower grades, together forming the Nine Grades of Rebirth.
Is Contemplation in This Sutra the Same as Modern Meditation or Reiki Attunement?
No. The sutra's contemplation has an explicit Buddhist context involving Amitabha, the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and rebirth. Modern meditation includes many religious and secular practices. Usui Reiki attunement is a ritual from a separate lineage. These should not be conflated.
Must I Enrol in a Reiki Course to Receive the Reading Material?
The old announcement does not specify such a condition, so it should not be assumed. Ask the centre about the actual distribution conditions and confirm these separately from course enrolment.
Where Can I Confirm the Comic's Author, Publisher and Edition?
The original announcement provides no author, publisher, edition, page count or licensing details. This page does not invent them. If you need a particular edition, ask the centre for the cover and copyright-page information.
