Why
1. Why Become a Reiki Teacher?
Turning Passion into a Vocation
After learning Reiki and experiencing personal changes, many people hope to develop their enthusiasm for helping others into a long-term career. Cathy Wong herself emerged from a low point in life and went on to share her learning through Soul Love Center. For details, see Cathy Wong's Healing Journey 。
Flexible Ways of Working
Reiki teachers can work full-time or part-time, offering individual sessions, teaching courses or holding workshops, with flexibility in how they work.
A Path of Personal Cultivation
Usui's memorial says, “Cultivation and discipline were the key to founding the spiritual method.” Becoming a teacher is more than a job: it is also a continuing path of personal cultivation. For the inscription, see Mikao Usui 。

—— Soul Love Center Teacher Course Introduction
Certification
What does 'Certification' mean? IARP and ICRT
Centre Certificate
All Soul Love Center levels are certificate workshops. On completing the Master course, the centre issues the relevant certificates and an IARP-recognised Usui/Tibetan Reiki Master certificate.
IARP Professional Membership
IARP (International Association of Reiki Professionals) is the International Association of Reiki Professionals, and its professional members must note:
- Open to anyone who has completed Reiki One to Reiki Master Teacher at any level, and reflects the highest level registered in the records;
- You must upload a valid Reiki certificate;
- You must agree to follow the IARP Code of Ethics;
- You can choose whether to be listed in the public Reiki Locator directory;
- IARP provides a low-cost liability insurance plan, which is currently only applicable to members of IARP in Canada, the United States, and Australia.
In other words, 'IARP member' reflects the level you have registered, and does not automatically equal master qualification. Cathy Wong is an IARP-registered Reiki Master Teacher (IARP no. 62694574).
Progression to ICRT
According to the center's data, Master-level students may also apply for membership on their own, completing the ICRT International Certification of Usui/Tibetan Reiki, to connect with the IARP International Certification Master-Level Teacher Qualification. For details, please consult the center.
Hong Kong Law
6. Starting a Practice in Hong Kong
The following overview of laws relevant to holistic practitioners is for general reference and is not legal advice. We are not aware of a Hong Kong licensing scheme specifically for Reiki. Consult professionals such as a solicitor and accountant before starting a business.
| Legislation | Key points |
|---|---|
| Business Registration Ordinance (Cap. 310) | Any business carried on for gain must obtain business registration, whether part-time or operating without premises. Sole proprietors and partnerships must apply within 1 month of commencing business. The Inland Revenue Department does not accept applications for businesses that have not yet started. |
| Medical Registration Ordinance (Cap. 161), section 28 | A person who is not a registered medical practitioner must not wilfully or falsely represent themselves as qualified to practise medicine or surgery, or use a title implying that qualification. Conviction may result in a level 6 fine and imprisonment for 3 years. |
| Undesirable Medical Advertisements Ordinance (Cap. 231) | Advertising that may reasonably lead others to use a therapy to treat or prevent diseases listed in Schedule 1 of the above Ordinance is prohibited, including any benign or malignant tumour; advertising includes online content. |
| Trade Descriptions Ordinance (Cap. 362) | False advertising or misleading omissions regarding services must not be made, including fabricated testimonials of students or participants. |
| Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) | When collecting personal data of clients or participants, it must be informed to the person and properly kept secure. |
Practical Reminders
- Advertising should avoid using terms such as 'treatment' or 'cure' for a specific disease; using 'relaxation' or 'self-care' is more appropriate.
- Student testimonials must be genuine and traceable, with claims about treating diseases removed.
- Consider purchasing professional liability insurance and consult an insurance advisor about the coverage.
Ethics
7. Professional Ethics for Reiki Teachers
The IARP Professional Code of Conduct sets clear ethical standards for Reiki practitioners and teachers, and the following are key points:
| Area | Key points from the IARP code |
|---|---|
| Confidentiality | Information discussed during a session must remain confidential unless disclosure is required by law or necessary to prevent imminent harm. |
| No diagnosis or prescribing | Do not diagnose, prescribe or advise clients to change treatment prescribed by their doctor. |
| Referral | When appropriate, recommend that guests consult qualified professionals, such as doctors or therapists. |
| Accurate representation | Explain that Reiki is an auxiliary therapy and that treatments are not guaranteed to cure, nor can they replace qualified medical care or professional support. |
| Explanation before a session | Before the first session, briefly explain the session process and expected outcomes. |
| Course information | Before the course begins, clearly list the teaching content for each level and what participants can achieve after completing the course. |
| Boundaries | Clients remain fully clothed throughout the session; breasts and private areas must not be touched. |
| Support after the course | Answer students' questions after they complete the course |
| Personal practice | Continue practising self-healing |
The Level 1 course at Soul Love Center also includes 'The Philosophy of Reiki and Professional Ethics', while the Master Level course includes 'Professional Ethics in Reiki Practice'.
Qualities
8. Qualities and Attitudes a Teacher Needs
A Foundation in the Five Principles
The Five Reiki Principles — just for today, do not be angry, do not worry, be grateful, work diligently and be kind to others — provide a valuable personal code for teachers.
Depth in One Tradition
Cathy believes that “among the eighty-four thousand Dharma doors, practising one path deeply can bring great understanding”. Teachers need sustained, in-depth practice in the system they teach.
Reason and Honesty
A responsible Reiki teacher will clearly explain the limitations of Reiki. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) states that Reiki has not been proven effective for any health purpose, but no harmful effects have been found in research. For more information, see. Does Reiki Work? 。
A Broad Knowledge Base
Knowledge of the I Ching, family constellations, meditation and insight, etc., helps teachers provide a more holistic perspective to accompany students, for example The connection between I Ching Philosophy and Reiki Healing and I Ching, Family Constellations and Reiki: Three Approaches to Deeper Healing 。
Career
9. Career and Income Models
| Model | Description | Level required |
|---|---|---|
| Individual Reiki sessions | Offer Reiki sessions to clients; for the process, see Reiki Session Fees and What Happens During a Session | From Level 1; higher levels and experience are recommended |
| Distant sessions | Offering Reiki at a distance | From Level 2 |
| Teaching classes | Teach courses at different levels and attune students | Master Level |
| Workshops and talks | Theme-based holistic wellbeing activities, such as meditation and insight, or Five Reiki Principles sharing | Depends on the content |
| Integrated services | Combining other professions in which you are qualified | Depends on each profession's requirements |
Realistic Expectations
Income depends on personal effort, teaching ability, the market and how you run the business; no course can guarantee it. A more measured approach is to start part-time while keeping your current job and gradually building experience and a student base.
Choosing
10. Key Points When Choosing a Master Course
- Verifiable instructor qualifications: For example, IARP-registered members can be checked through the official Reiki Locator.
- Course content is clearly outlined: according to IARP guidelines, instructors should list the content of each level in writing before the class begins.
- Admission requirements are reasonable: does the program require completing prerequisite levels and accumulating practical experience?
- Complete attunement and teaching procedures: On completing the course, will you be able to attune others and deliver the full teaching programme?
- Is the certificate and connection information transparent? What certificate is issued? Can it be connected to other international qualifications?
- Is the instructor honest and realistic? Will they exaggerate the effectiveness or income of their treatments?

Myths
11. Common Myths About Changing Careers
Myth One: Having a master's certificate guarantees income?
No. The certificate is just the starting point. Income comes from continuous practice, teaching, and business operations.
Myth Two: Do I Need a Special Gift to Be a Teacher?
Learning Reiki does not require special talent, but becoming a teacher requires solid case practice and self-discipline.
Misconception Three: Can a Reiki teacher self-identify as a 'therapist' to treat people's illnesses?
No. Reiki cannot replace medical care. People who are not registered medical practitioners must not claim qualification to practise medicine or surgery, and advertising must not claim to treat the diseases listed in the relevant schedule.
Myth Four: Should I Quit My Job and Go Full-Time Immediately?
Not recommended. Starting as a part-time worker and gradually transitioning is lower risk.
FAQ
Becoming a Reiki Teacher: Frequently Asked Questions
Which Level Must I Complete to Become a Reiki Teacher?
To attune others and teach classes, you must complete the Master course. At Soul Love Center, the Usui/Tibetan Reiki Master course is open only to students who have completed Usui Reiki Advanced. Graduates will be able to perform attunements and confidently deliver the complete Reiki teaching programme.
Is IARP Membership Equivalent to a Master Qualification?
No. IARP Professional Members are open to anyone who has completed Reiki One to Reiki Master Teacher courses, and they must upload a Reiki certificate and agree to follow IARP Professional Guidelines. Member qualifications reflect the highest level registered, and do not automatically equate to Master Level status.
What legal considerations should be taken into account when practicing Reiki in Hong Kong?
Relevant laws include the Medical Registration Ordinance (Cap. 161), under which unregistered persons must not represent themselves as qualified to practise medicine or surgery; the Undesirable Medical Advertisements Ordinance (Cap. 231), which prohibits claims that a treatment can treat listed diseases; and the Business Registration Ordinance (Cap. 310), which requires sole proprietorships or partnerships to apply for business registration within one month of starting business. Consult a professional before opening a practice.
Does Reiki Teaching Provide a Stable Income?
There are no guarantees. Income depends on personal investment, teaching ability, market conditions, and business operations. A more stable approach is to start as a part-time practitioner and gradually accumulate experience and students.
Can a Reiki teacher diagnose or recommend stopping medication?
No. The IARP Professional Code of Conduct requires members not to diagnose, prescribe, or recommend changing a patient's treatment plan, and should refer to qualified professionals when appropriate.
Can someone without a holistic wellbeing background become a Reiki teacher?
You can start with Usui Reiki Level 1 Initially, no religious background or special talent is required. Becoming a teacher requires completing all levels of courses and accumulating solid case practice experience.
